Terim to Quit Galatasaray

Galatasaray coach Terim to quit

ISTANBUL, March 4 (Reuters) - Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim has signalled that he will resign after his team were knocked out of the UEFA Cup on Wednesday.

'Tomorrow (Thursday) I will make a proposal to the chairman. Even if I leave Galatasaray, I will always stand by the chairman and the club,' Terim was quoted as saying at a news conference after Wednesday's 3-0 defeat at Spanish club Villarreal.

Villarreal's third round, second leg victory gave them a 5-2 win on aggregate, adding to Galatasaray's problems after a disappointing season in the Turkish first division.

'If anyone is guilty it is me. I don't know what answer the chairman Ozhan Canaydin will give. Being unsuccessful is a result, I have been unsuccessful,' Terim said.

Galatasaray will celebrate their centenary next year, five years after Terim led the club to triumph in the UEFA Cup with victory over Arsenal on penalties in the final.

'In the club's 100th year a new team, a new stadium and a new boss could inject enthusiasm,' he said.

Galatasaray, who are using Istanbul's Olympic stadium while they work on a project to build a new stadium, are fifth in the table 13 points behind leaders and city rivals Fenerbahce and Besiktas.

Well its offical now hes gonna coach for 2 more weeks then resign/quit when the new Chairman is choosen. I love the guy to death and im probably the biggest Galatasaray Fan here but he made our team Crap. Lucescu was doing just fine and the chairman fired him for Terim...I cant deny what Terim did for Galatasaray and Turkish football in general but he really dropped the ball this time. Hes signings were all pretty much crap from Lukunku, De Boer, Revivo, Hakan Unsal...on the other hand he did sign Hakan Sukur Back, Prates, Bratu, Petre and Necati. Anyway since we will be searching for a new manager now I say they hire former Galatasaray Great Hagi. He didnt do much at Bursaspor but he didnt have much to do it with. I at Galatasray he'll have better coaches and trainers etc and more Money. Anyway That was my two cents....Later

If Hagi will coach Galatasaray your hopes of winning a championship in his contract years shouldn't be there, he is a horrible coach, I love him as a player I'm Romanian for crying out loud :crazyboy: but I saw the games that he coached with Romania for WC2002 qualifiers and I'm telling you Hagi can't coach. Oh and he had many players to work with with the Romanian NT.

Ohh...I didnt know that about Hagi anyway I do NOT want Hector Cuper he made Inter Milan ****. I wouldnt mind Klaus Topmöller

Galatasaray coach Terim resigns

ISTANBUL, March 6 (Reuters) - Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim resigned on Friday after they were knocked out of the UEFA Cup in the third round, the Turkish club's chairman said.

Wednesday's 3-0 defeat by Spain's Villarreal completed a 5-2 aggregate reverse and comes on the back of a disappointing season so far in the Turkish first division.

'We have accepted our coach's resignation. So that the post isn't empty, he will continue his duties until a new choice has been made,' Galatasaray chairman Ozhan Canaydin told reporters after meeting Terim.

Terim earlier said he took responsibility for the club's poor performances in European competition, and at home where they are currently fifth in the first division, 13 points behind Istanbul rivals Fenerbahce and Besiktas.

Terim, 50, led Galatasaray to four consecutive league titles after taking the helm in 1996. In 2000 he masterminded a defeat of Arsenal in the UEFA Cup final.

Later that year he joined Fiorentina as coach, but resigned after clashing with the board. In 2001 he had a brief stint at AC Milan before he was sacked in November. He returned to Galatasaray in 2002.

Terim also played for Galatasaray, who will celebrate their 100th anniversary next year, in the 1970s and served as Turkey's national coach in 1993.

Hopefully we get a new coach and a new Chairman with Money.
